Two-stroke engine: In this type of diesel engine, the piston only needs to move up and down once during the entire cycle. The two-stroke cycle has three stages.

1. Exhaust and intake: fresh air enters the cylinder through the side of the cylinder, while the exhaust gas in the cylinder is discharged through the exhaust valve on the top.

2. Compression: when the inlet valve and exhaust valve are closed, the piston moves up to compress the air and increase the temperature. When the piston reaches the top of the cylinder, fuel is injected and ignites spontaneously.

3. Work done: The burning mixture pushes the piston down and drives the crankshaft to transfer power to the wheels.

Two-stroke engines are smaller and lighter than four-stroke engines, and tend to be more efficient because they can generate power once the piston moves up and down (a four-stroke engine requires the piston to move up and down twice to generate power). But it also means that two-stroke engines require more cooling and lubrication, and suffer higher wear and tear.
