How do diesel engines convert fuel into kinetic energy?

Four-stroke engine: Like gasoline engines, it usually works by repeating four processes in a cycle, during which the piston moves up and down twice and the crankshaft rotates twice.

1. Intake: when the piston moves down, the air (light blue) is drawn into the cylinder through the open intake valve (green) on the right side.

2, compression: the intake valve is closed, the piston moves up, compress the air mixture, so that the cylinder temperature rises. Fuel (dark blue) is injected into the cylinder through a fuel injection valve and ignites spontaneously. No spark plug is required to ignite.

3. Work done: When the fuel-air mixture burns, the energy generated pushes the piston down and drives the crankshaft (red wheel at the bottom) to transfer power to the wheels.

4. Exhaust: the left exhaust valve (green) is opened to discharge the exhaust gas, which is pushed out by the returning piston.
